How do I assign them to the correct category only?

  I have added two parent categories, with a category widget for each. However child categories won’t go to the correct parent, instead show up in both. Can you help?

  There is no way to specify the displayed categories. The Categories widget includes all categories.

  You might want to try one Categories widget with “Show hierarchy” checked.
