How do I avoid auto-renewal?

I have a domain that I paid $17 for last August. Unfortunately, I have not even had time to get started on this blog! I simply don’t want to renew when it is due. Is there an instant renewal that I need to cancel ahead of time, or how do I just get rid of it in general? I have never typed anything on the blog.
