How do I create a banner across the top of my front page?

Hi! I have created my blog, using the Sorbet theme. At the moment I have an empty box at the top of my front page but I would like to place a banner across the width of the top, can you please tell me how to:
Get rid of the empty box?
Create a banner across the top of the page?

If your theme supports it, you can set up a custom header image using these instructions:
