how do I create a 'read more' link and can this be done on published posts?

These are the WordPress.com forums and you have a self-hosted WordPress.org site. I don’t know if the dashboards of the two platforms are the same. Here at WordPress.com it is simple to click on the “Insert Read More” button in the visual editor in the appropriate part of a post, new or already published.

Thanks! After poking around some more I found the “Read More” button instructions somewhere. WordPress is a lot to absorb for a beginner so have patience with us nubuies!
