How do I create a sidebar and show blogs in summary form?

I have two problems. Although I have clicked ‘summary’ under ‘reading’ , my blog posts show up in full text — so the blog page is miles long (or alternatively, I reduce the number of posts per page and then it’s hard to find all the blogs in each category). How do I get to summary? Also, I would rather have a side bar than a footer but I can’t find an option to create that. I have McKinley. It is currently a very awkward blog. Thank you!

    Hi,

Although I have clicked ‘summary’ under ‘reading’ , my blog posts show up in full text — so the blog page is miles long…

That setting does not affect the length of posts on the posts or blog page. It does effect the length of posts in feeds, among which are email notifications of a new post to followers. From the Reading Settings support page:

For each article in a feed you can select Full text or Summary. Full text means that the entire contents of a post are included in the feed. Summary means that only the first 55 words are included in the feed, along with the option to continue reading the rest of the post.

How do I get to summary?

Some themes display abbreviated post content on the posts page by default. If the theme you are using displays the entire posts, the thing to do is to use More tags to truncate each post that you want to display in abbreviated form on the posts page. The full post will still display on single posts when using More tags.

Also, I would rather have a side bar than a footer but I can’t find an option to create that. I have McKinley.

You can’t add a sidebar to a theme that doesn’t include that option. The McKinley theme has only the footer widget area.
