How do I disconnect my new domain from my existing one?

  • Unknown's avatar

I bought a second domain today, but it’s tied to my existing one. How do I separate it so I can set up a separate page?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hey there! Have you already created the second site? If not, please get started here:
    https://wordpress.com/start

Skip the domain option, but do choose a paid plan to support it.

Once you’ve got a separate site with its own plan, contact us and confirm which domain you’re moving, and we’ll help you get the domain moved to the correct site. Let us know if you have any questions in the meantime. Cheers :)

Thanks, Supernova, for the reply. That’s what I did. I clicked on “Use a Domain I Own.” It won’t allow me to do it because it says my new domain name is already connected to a WordPress.com site. I need to know how to separate it so I can set up a separate page. Please advise.

  • Hello there,

Ok, so it sounds like you require an additional site on the account, with it’s own domain? Is that correct?

If yes, you would first need to create a site here: https://wordpress.com/start?ref=calypso-selector&source=my-home

Once created, the domain would need to be moved as per these instructions: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-a-domain-to-another-wordpress-com-site/

To set a primary custom domain on that new site, the new site would need a paid plan. If this is of interest, as this is a new site, with a new plan and domain, we may be able to reimburse the purchase of the domain, so that you can make use of the free domain for the first year perk.

Thanks for the reply. That’s the first thing I tried but that doesn’t work. When I try to create the site, it tells me my new domain name is connected to my other WordPress.com site.

The paid plan may be the answer.

  • Unknown's avatar

You do need a paid plan, but when asked about using a domain, skip that option and use the free *.wordpress.com site URL for now. Once you have that in place, Staff can move the domain over to the new site – this isn’t something you can do on your own.

I hope that clarifies things! Let us know when you get that in place and we’ll be happy to get that switched over.

Ok. I bought another paid plan, dennyhamann.wordpress.com. Please move the domain name I previously purchased, dennyhamann.net, over to it. After you’ve completed the move, I should have two sites, dennishamann.com and dennyhamann.net. Is that correct? Please issue my PayPal account credit for $19 for the domain name charge. Please advise.

Ok, before we do anything, I want to make sure we get the right domain on the right WordPress site.

    1. dennyhamann.net moves to oldbeachguy.wordpress.com
    2. dennishamann.com stays on dennishamanncom.wordpress.com

If you can confirm that this is correct, we’ll get to work getting that domain moved over and that domain purchase charge refunded.

    Thanks!

  • Thank you! All sorted. And as your plan comes with a domain credit, I’ve applied your domain purchase toward that as well. Cheers!

Thank you. I just checked it, https://dennyhamann.net it comes up but oldbeachguy@wordpress shows up in the search. Why is that? My other one, https://dennishamann.com doesn’t do that. Advise

  • Hi there,

I’m not sure what you meant by this:

“I just checked it, https://dennyhamann.net it comes up but oldbeachguy@wordpress shows up in the search. Why is that?”

Can you clarify what search terms you are using, and possibly a screenshot of the results page you are getting? Also to clarify, Google can be quite slow to respond to URL changes (4-6 weeks is the guidance we usually give) and what they show is not under our direct control, so there may be a limit to how we can help here, but usually it does sort itself out over time.

    Thanks for the additional info!

On my MacBook, at the top, in the search bar, I type https://dennyhamann.net. It goes to my website. When it does, the URL in the search bar changes to oldbeachguy.wordpress.com. If I search oldbeachguy.wordpress.com, my site is there too. My other site, https://dennishamann.com, doesn’t do that. When I’m on dennyhamann.net and click on my sites or home, it doesn’t list them separately. It says Denny Hamann oldbeachguy.wordpress.com, and under that, it says coming soon. I’m paying for two separate domains. I should have two separate sites, two separate bios, two of everything, but they are tied together. Please advise. Also, I tried to post a screenshot, but it won’t allow me to copy/paste. Plus, it won’t allow me to post a picture.

  • Thanks for clarifying! For that, you are going to want to set dennyhamann.net as your “primary address”, so that you see that specific address instead of oldbeachguy.wordpress.com when you visit that site.

We have a guide for how to do that here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/set-a-primary-address/

    In short:

Start from your domain settings page for oldbeachguy.wordpress.com here:
    https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/oldbeachguy.wordpress.com

You should see a three-dot button to the right of dennyhamann.net on that page – click it, and select the “primary domain/address” option which comes up.

I appreciate the help, but you’re the fifth person who has worked with me on this issue. I think that’s why I’m chasing my tail. Is it possible to get one person to follow through until my problem is resolved?

Anyone designated as Staff are WordPress.com Support. We don’t individually work on a single issue until it’s resolved – we work as a team. So you will get different members of staff helping you.

Additionally, if you’re responding from your email instead of on your thread on the forums directly – https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/how-do-i-disconnect-my-new-domain-from-my-existing-one/?view=all – you will see that all the information we’ve been asking you is in one spot.

Domain changes cannot be done by any member of Staff; that is something you need to do yourself. Looking at your site, it appears you were able to change your domain settings so your site oldbeachguy.wordpress.com now loads as dennishamann.com.

It looks like you’re all set. Let us know if you have any other questions.
