How do I format posts?

I can’t find the format menu that is meant to allow me to change the nature of my posts to ‘asides’ in twentyfourteen. If I click on new post at the top of the dashboard, it only gives me a few options and does not include asides.
Most bits of help that I’ve found refer to a format menu on the right hand side of the screen or an option to edit your post when/after writing it to make it an aside: I don’t seem to have either of these. Thanks!

You can follow the instructions in this guide on how to change post formats: http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-formats/
If you don’t see the option, then make sure that the ‘format’ checkbox is checked in your ‘Screen Options’. The ‘Screen Options’ tab can be found in the top right hand corner on your post editor page.
