How do I migrate my WordPress blog to a new host (my company website)?
-
Hi there,
I wish to move all the contents of my blog from its current .wordpress.com URL to a new site, under by my company website. I’m concerned that I will lose the users/subscribers/other blog properties that are currently associated with my blog. Is there any WordPress service that can migrate my blog to my website or do I have to do this myself through the procedure described here: http://howtomatter.com/wordpress-how-to-change-hosts/ ? Please let me know ASAP, thank you very much!
Best,
Max

If you’re interested, we do offer an upgrade called Guided Transfer (available in the Store section of your blog’s Dashboard) where we take care of everything for you: http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
Otherwise, you’ll need to install WordPress from http://wordpress.org/ on a hosting provider. We have some recommendations at http://get.wp.com/hosting/
Once that’s done, you can move your content following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities.
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/WordPress.org has complete support and documentation sites for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress at:
http://wordpress.org/support/
http://codex.wordpress.org/We do offer yearly and one-time premium support packages for self-hosted WordPress sites through our VIP program, available at http://vip.wordpress.com

Thanks for your quick reply! Could I also just use the Subdomain mapping Upgrade to map my WordPress.COM blog to a subdomain of my company’s site (ie, blog.sitename.com)? Then I’ll continue to use WordPress.COM to post to and manage my blog and all its properties but it will just appear on blog.sitename.com. Is this correct?
Thanks again for your help,
Max -
Yes, you can map a subdomain to your WordPress.com blog following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-subdomain/

Fantastic! That’s exactly what we’ll do then.
One more question, though: I currently do not have any theme on my blog but would like to add one. The linked site says that “The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes or plugins.” I’m a little confused by the “additional” themes part. Does this mean that I will only be able to add a theme to the blog before mapping to my subdomain and then that theme is locked in and unchangeable? Or does this mean that I won’t be able to map my blog if it contains a theme in the first place – ie, themes can’t be mapped to non-WordPress sites?
Thanks,
Max -
Themes can’t be uploaded to WordPress.com. That’s a feature of self-hosted blogs through WordPress.org.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/
You may use any of the available themes we have under Appearance > Themes in your dashboard, and you may want to look into purchasing the Custom Design Upgrade to customize one of the themes we offer:

I see. My question is more of whether the theme that I choose for my blog will stay when I map to my subdomain. That’s the part of the description on the Domain Mapping site that I didn’t understand.

Yes, you’ll still have access to all of the themes at WordPress.com, and your existing theme will not change.
