How do I register a domain name with WordPress that is registered elsewhere?
-
I currently own the domain name lindsayhand.com through Nettica, which was recently acquired by Dyn. It’s up for renewal on July 7 of this year but would like to handle registration through WordPress as I do for my other domain fatheratfifty.com. I’m not sure how to handle this. Do I need to let the registration expire with Dyn and then register it with WordPress ? Or is there a way to move registration to Worpress before it expires. It’s very important that I do not lose the name lindsayhand.com. Can you help me walk through the process as I am a bit of an amateur when it comes to this.

While we register new domains here at WordPress.com, we’re not able to accept incoming transfers of existing domain names. If you do not like your current registrar, you could always transfer it to another registrar of your choosing, godaddy for example.
While it is theoretically possible to let lindsayhand.com expire and then re-register as a new domain through WordPress.com, that path carries a very real risk of losing your domain to auction or domain squatters. In addition, domain expiration is a pretty long process and you would be without a functioning URL for some time. This document explains things as if a domain registered through us was expiring, but it will give you a pretty good idea of the process since most registrars are similar:
