How do I set my static front page to be a hub for the rest of my rockin' great w

I am new to this, and feel that the search for answers to my problems keep bringing me in a loop to answers that don’t solve my problems.
I am trying to establish a website via WordPress. I want to use a static home page, which acts as a hub to my various professional and personal interests – acting, writing, general philosophizing and politics, etc.
But as I try to follow your instructions, I feel they require a degree of understanding I do not yet have. Simple things. Go to timothydeenihan.com and you’ll see I can’t figure out:
– Why can’t I get rid of the ‘blogroll’ and items below?
– What do I have to do to make the text widgets actually ‘live’?
– I followed the instructions on your how-to page, but can’t find the button (link? widget? hotspot?) for ‘posts’ to allow me to move to a next page.
– I can’t figure out how to hide the recent posts on this static page which isn’t supposed to be showing recent posts.I reckon I’m floundering here a bit, but it simply Doesn’t. Make. Sense. To me.

1. It looks like you’ve already gotten rid of that.
2. On your blog’s theme, the Primary Sidebar widgets are only displayed on the blog page.

4. You’ll need to actually publish a page first, then you can set it as your front page following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/
