How do I set up my WordPress.com DNS settings correctly?

  • Unknown's avatar

I used to host my site on WordPress.com, then switched to DreamHost and WordPress.org. However, I recently canceled by DreamHost subscription so that I can go back to having my site hosted on WordPress.com. My domain name is http://www.wholemeprograms.com, but now the site will not load. When I go to manage my domain, it says that I have to edit my name servers at my registrar. I don’t have DreamHost anymore, though. How do I go back to just being hosted on WordPress.com?

  • Hi there, first of all, welcome back, we’re glad to have you! :-)

An important thing to keep in mind that since WordPress doesn’t provide email hosting, if you have any email address on the domain wholemeprograms.com, as you appear to, you’ll need to set that up with a third-party provider in order to continue receiving email. You can read our guide to adding email here.

Since your domain wholemeprograms.com is still hosted by WordPress.com, you’ll just need to log into your domain administration control panel here to update the name servers.

You can do that by logging into your dashboard and going to Store > Domains:

    https://wholemeprograms.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

Scroll down to where it says Domain Administration and choose “Make Changes to DNS” from the drop-down menu, and follow the prompts from there.

We have a full guide on updating your name servers here:

    Change name servers

Once you’re logged in, you’ll need to remove the DreamHost name servers and add the ones for WordPress.com:

    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

If you have any trouble, just let us know.
