How do I upload a HTML file from Google Analytics to domain?
-
Hey! My issue started when I tried to install the Google Analytics plugin which said I have to be registered with WordPress.org. So, I followed the instructions and purchased a self-hosting plan, but can’t transfer the domain to them for it is still within the 60 period with WordPress.com. So, we’ve pointed to a temp url and I’m waiting to transfer the domain. But now, my statistics aren’t working in my WP dashboard. And I can’t access Google Analytics because I am unable to upload the HTML file to verify that I own the domain I purchased from you. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Mike Marker

Hi there!
Did you update your DNS information to point to your new site? Can you tell me what domain you’re working with?
You’ll need to upload the HTML file to your self hosted site, not your WordPress.com site.
If you exported all of your site’s content and imported it into a self hosted WordPress with the Jetpack plugin set up, I can transfer your stats from your old WordPress.com site to your new self hosted WordPress. I just need to know the specific sites you need that info transferred from. Please note, once stats are merged, this can’t be undone.

Hey thank for getting back to me! :) I did update the DNS into to point to the temp url from my hosting site. The domain I’m working with is MikeMarker.com.
I tried uploading the HTML file using FileZilla, but was unable to connect to the server. My hosting site provider said that I needed to contact you guys since the domain: mikemarker.com is still registered with WordPress.com.
I didn’t use a plugin to transfer the content. I downloaded it in a file and uploaded it myself. (Surprisely, I figured out how to do that :) )
So, as of right now, I guess I don’t know where I need to upload the HTML file. Because the domain is registered with WP and pointed to a temp. url with GoDaddy.com.
Thanks again! Hope to hear back from you! -
So, currently your domain is set up in a way that we call “mapped”. This is a totally normal way to use a domain, even though its temporary for you. So in order to upload that HTML file, you’ll need to connect to your self hosted site.
I can’t really say why you’re getting a connection error there, you’ll need to contact support at GoDaddy about that. They’ll be able to tell you specifically what server to connect to and how to get that set up.
As for your stats though, downloading the export file and then uploading it as an import on your new site is exactly what I meant. :) This preserves the post-specific information that our stats are tied to. However, in order for me to transfer your WordPress.com stats for you to keep using, you’ll need to set up the Jetpack plugin. You can learn more about that here:
Let me know if I can help further!
