How does upgrading to wordpress.org work?
-
So yesterday I’ve upgraded my blog at wordpress.com to wordpress.org (meaning my greenbrickroadproject.wordpress.com became greenbrickroadproject.org)
I did everything through my dashboard, purchased a Domain, Domain Mapping and the Privacy Policy.
Now, I understand it can take a while for the new address to become active… But I still don’t have the new dashboard (with plugin option for example) so I want to ask:
– Do I have to do anything else or just wait?
– Do I need a web host or have I done that during my upgrade?
– Do I need to export/import my blog to the new address?I apologise if this has already been discussed but I haven’t found the topic in the forum.
Thanks for the help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I think you may be confused about what WordPress.org is. This page may help:
What it appears you have done is to add a custom domain name (greenbrickroadproject.org) to your WordPress.com site (greenbrickroadproject.wordpress.com).
– Do I have to do anything else or just wait?
I am seeing greenbrickroadproject.org to your WordPress.com site. So you should be good to go.
– Do I need a web host or have I done that during my upgrade?
If you are using a WordPress.com site with a Custom Domain, no, you would not have a webhost. If what you were actually trying to do was set up a self-hosted WordPress.org site, yes, you would need to get a webhost.
– Do I need to export/import my blog to the new address?
Similar answer to the previous question. If you are using a WordPress.com site with a Custom Domain, no, you would not need to export/import. If what you were actually trying to do was set up a self-hosted WordPress.org site, yes, you would need to get export and import into your WordPress.org site.

Rootjosh,
Thanks very much for the thorough reply.
I thought I was changing my blog into wordpress.org.
Before upgrading there was a message at the top of my dashboard suggesting I could do that and it would give me more liberty to work with the blog, like having plugins for instance, which is why I made the change. So I followed instructions and made the mentioned purchase but I’m lost now at to what I’ve actually done and what are my next steps (sorry it’s boring beginners talk…)Again thanks for the help.

If you truly want a WordPress.org site, where you’re responsible for all the tech support and security and so on, then keep the domain name. You will need it anyway on a WOrdpress.org site. YOu will need to buy hosting elsewhere, like renting a plot of land to put your house on. That will cost about $120 a year. Then you need to buy a theme; free ones can be full of malware.
I do think you may be getting in over your head with a WordPress.org site, though. Why not stick with the one here for a month or so, see how it works and if it’s enough for you. If it’s not, then you can just buy hosting then, being much more practiced and you’ll have an easier time installing everything.

I’m afraid you must have misread. We never would have promoted any upgrade as offering plugins as they are not allowed on WordPress.com.
If you ARE interested in switching to self-hosted, this guide will step you through the process of moving your site to a WordPress.org version:

As we only support sites hosted here at WordPress.com, all issues with the new site – including the importing of the file – must be taken to the WordPress.org support community:
