How is wordpress.com for a high school newspaper?

Does anyone have any advice about setting up a simple high school newspaper on wordpress.com. We have done monthly issues in the past with 9-10 articles per month, so we want a pretty simple theme. We want people to be able to access the article archives as monthly ‘issues.’ It would be great to share announcements and events. It would also be nice to allow other school clubs to post info. The foundation is a news/opinion site with not too frequent posting.
