How much does a domain REALLY cost

So I am trying to start a new blog. WordPress had my email address on file for a blog I scrapped years ago. I got a new password and started creating my blog, intending to get a new domain once I get my first paycheck.
My friend is telling me she pays only $25 a year. When I look at your plans, they start at ‘$2.99 a month, billed anually.’ That’s a lot more than $25.
She is recommending I start over.
My concern is that my username and future domain name are already going to be taken if I do this.
Help.

Essentially, domains are $26, which include registration, mapping, and private registration. However, you can no longer register or map a domain individually with WordPress.com. Moving forward, domain subscriptions can be purchased as a part of one of our many plans here. This recent domains with plans only update was made as we continue to work diligently to provide the best WordPress.com experience for both users who choose to purchase a plan as well as those who choose the free plan.
