How to do a Members Only area and secure Payment/Donation by credit card function

I was selected by my club (Axemen M/C Michigan Chapter 2) to start a website. I’ve never done anything like this before. I started a free site and realize we will need a Premium account to get the functionality we require. We want a public area and a ‘Members Only Area’. We are a 501c-3 charity and also want to add a module so donations may be made securely by credit cards and PayPal. Is that function included in the Premium account or is there an additional feature we need to purchase? If so, how much?

  • Hi there,

I see you posted a couple weeks ago, but someone has marked the thread for staff so I want to ask if you still need help with this.

To have a members-only area on your site and the ability to take secure payments you’ll need to use plugins, and that is only possible on WordPress.com with the Business Plan, or otherwise with the self-hosted version of WordPress, called WordPress.org.

The WordPress.com Business Plan costs $299 a year. You might be able to find cheaper hosting options for a self-hosted site, but you’ll need a bit of technical knowledge for a self-hosted site, as most hosting plans don’t include support for the WordPress software so if something breaks you’ll need to fix it yourself.

Also be aware that, depending on which membership and payment gateway plugins you use, there might be additional costs for those plugins. For example, you could achieve what you want with the WooCommerce plugin, which is free, but for memberships you’ll need a paid extension for that plugin, as that functionality is not included in the plugin’s basic version.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.
