  i saw on a wordpress blog site at the top there posts were categorized into a few different categories. examples, music, food, life, etc. how does one do this?

  Create a custom menu and then you can add categories, tags, pages, pretty much anything you want to the top navigation. Custom menus give you lots of flexibility.
