How to migrate post from one word press site to another while preserving formatting and allowing me to edit in between

I’m trying to make a post form one word press blog to another one. I’m editing the posts in between. I’m doing this for a friend and editing for English language fluency issues.

What’s the best way of doing this that will preserve the formatting? My first instinct was to copy paste into Microsoft Word, do the editing and there, and then copy paste into the new word press site. The formatting stayed intact after I copy pasted into Microsoft Word, but then when I copy pasted it into the new word press site all the formatting was strapped. I have a hard time editing without a word editor like Microsoft Word (because I’m disabled and use Dragon NaturallySpeaking).

Not sure what the best approach is. Do you have any thoughts?

  • Hi there,

First, switch to the HTML view of the editor, then copy from there.

Paste that into a text editor like Notepad, make your edits there, then copy from there back into the HTML view of the editor in the new post.

I realise Word is easier for you, but formatting won’t be preserved if you use Word. This is because Word uses a different type of code, called Rich Text, that doesn’t work the same as the HTML code used by websites, and copying content between the web and Word (or any word processor for that matter) will almost always result in issues with formatting either being messed up, or stripped out completely.

What might work better is to use Google Docs, rather than MS Word. I’m not sure how well that works with assistive technologies like Dragon, though, but I’d imagine Google has their house in order with something like that :)
