How to move domain name to wordpress that was previously owned somewhere else?

    Originally I had been mapping our domain name sacredgroundscoffeehouse.org to our blog. We had owned the name through 1and1.com. We had been paying a lot of money for services web services and the domain name we weren’t using. We let the contract end without renewing it in hopes of just buying the domain name through wordpress.org, but even though the domain is expired it says it is unavailable. What do I do to get the domain name purchased through wordpress?

    Hi Steve,

    Even though your ownership of the domain name has expired, 1&1 hasn’t released the domain name yet. Until they release it, you won’t be able to register it again anywhere else.

    You can see the status of that domain name by checking WHOIS:

    http://who.is/whois/sacredgroundscoffeehouse.org

    In general, we recommend not letting domain names expire (whether they are registered here at WordPress.com or elsewhere), because it can take time for an expired domain name to be released and there’s no guarantee it will ever become available for you to register again elsewhere. If you’re sure you want to let the registration with 1&1 expire so you can register the domain here at WordPress.com, you should get in touch with 1&1 for more details about when the domain will fully expire and be released again.
