  Whether you transfer or map your domain is completely up to you, and depends on whether you want to have your site and domain with two different providers or in the same place. Note that for either option you’ll have to upgrade your site to a paid plan.

  Also keep in mind that you can launch your site and make it public without adding your own domain. After you click on Launch Site, there should be a Skip Purchase option on the domains screen. Click that to continue launching the site using your free WordPress.com address.
