How to purchase new domain without need to upgrade existing?
-
I’m trying to buy a new $5 upgrade domain to my page to replace a different free domain assigned to me when I open my WordPress account. The new domain I want to attach to my site is available. When I click on the add a domain (the one i want to purchase and use) I get prompted to pay for both, the original free on that I want to replace and the new one I want to buy. Bill shows up as double. Any idea how I can buy a new domain without needing to buy the original free one?

https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/ says:
Every site comes with a free address with .wordpress.com in the URL. You can hide the .wordpress.com part by registering a new domain if you have purchased a WordPress.com plan.
When you say the bill shows up as double, do you mean the cost is doubled or that it just shows both domains? When you upgrade from a free plan to Personal, Premium etc you are given the option to create a custom domain. This exists alongside your free domain. If you ever decided not to renew your upgraded plan/custom domain then you could return to your free WordPress.com domain. To upgrade a free WordPress.com plan: https://wordpress.com/plans
