How to redirect from one permalink structure to another

Hi, I have transferred my website from wordpress.com to wordpress.org, and have moved all the old posts through xml. However, in the new website I set up the permalink structure as “post name”, while the old structure was “day and name”. I come across a lot of posts using the old permalink structure (day and name) in google searches which now, obviously, don’t exist. They do exist in the “post name” structure, but if anyone were to click on the link on google they wouldn’t be able to access the website.

What I’m trying to do it to create a redirect so that everytime /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/ is present in the url, it redirects it to simply /%postname%/. How is it possible?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi there,

What is the WordPress.com site? If you haven’t deleted that site, you can buy the Site Redirect upgrade for it to redirect the free address to the domain you’re now using for your site. But that might not work properly in any case if you’re using a different permalink structure on the new site.

Beyond that the only thing you can really do here is wait for Google to reindex the content at the new URLs. You might be able to speed this up if you verify the new site in Google Search console, and submit a sitemap of your site there.

If you had the old site verified there already, you can also use the Address Change tool in Search Console to notify Google of the site address change.

I’ve unfortunately already deleted the old website. As long as it’s only a matter of time before Google reindexes my posts then it’s fine. Thanks for your help!

  • You’re very welcome.

Please do verify your site with Google, and submit your sitemap to them to speed up the process.
