How to regain access to domain name cancelled in error?

For MendocinoCoastWriters, the domain name purchased through WordPress was cancelled, and shouldn’t have been. We want it to point to a website hosted by weebly. The domain name of writersofthemendocinocoast.org is not available. Is WP “holding” it somehow?

As stated during the cancellation, we cannot guarantee that you’ll be able to re-register it.
Canceled domains become the property of our registrar partner and are only returned to the public market at their discretion. Unfortunately, we have no control over this process.
