How to remove page scroll while using the "more" tag

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I was wondering if there is a way to remove the “page scroll” that automatically occurs when i use the “more” tag on my posts.
I don’t have a premium templates, but I know a little about HTML and i would love to know if there’s any way to insert code in the “text” tab of the post editor…

  • Hi there, there isn’t a way I know of to change the behaviour of the “More” tag or to add this functionality manually. This tag links from the excerpt to the point on the page where the post continues, so folks can keep reading where they left off.

If you need anything else, just let me know.

Anyway i can tweek it while using wp.com (not wp.org) using CSS?

  • No, I’m afraid it’s not possible to modify that with CSS alone, as it’s a back-end programming change that would be needed.

If you explain why you want to make this change I may have other suggestions for you, so feel free to give me the context on this and I’m glad to put my thinking cap on. :-)

Hello & thanks for the help!

    1) I don’t want my post to display fully, just the beginning, on my home page, in order for it to feel less “full”

    2) I hate the automatic page scroll that happens and that takes the post half way through when you click on it (I really wonder why it was made that way…)

    3) I’m husing the Blaskan theme which doesn’t seem to support the “excerpt” option (that would have been a fine alternative)

Is that enough context or do you need more specifics infos?
You can go check my blog there : psbackpacker.com

    Thanks again!

Oh, at 2) I mean “i hate the automatic page scroll that happens when you click on it (the link created by the “more” tag i mean)

  • Thanks for explaining your goal, it’s helpful!

The reason that the “more” tag links to the point at which the first part of the post ended is to prevent readers from having to figure out where they left off reading, and having to scan through the piece looking for the right spot. It’s actually meant to make readers’ lives easier, since More is often used to divvy up long posts into more easily readable chunks.

I can think of a couple of options that might achieve what you’re after.

    1) You could try using the <!--nextpage--> tag instead of the <!--more--> tag you’re currently using. You can read more here about this tag. It’s a bit of a different effect than “more” but it might do the trick – you could try experimenting with it. What it does is split the post onto separate pages. In addition to having the automated pagination it creates, you’d also be able to manually link to the second part of the post from any words you like such as “Continue Reading.”

    2) You might want to look for a theme that displays excerpts on the blog homepage. Some of the themes that support this are:
    Ascetica
    Bold News
    Origin
    Structure

There are many others, so if you think you might want to try this route and would like to see the full list, let me know and I can post it for you.

Thanks again. The “next page” function ain’t a bad idea, but i think i’d rather use the excerpt.
I’ll go have a look at the themes you suggest but I would indeed really appreciate a full list of themes that support the excerpts.
I’m really thankful for your help in that matter!

  • I’ve emailed the list to you. Good luck!
