How to switch from block editor to classic editor

I’ve been using WordPress for years but now you have changed the opening menu. Now after I add and save my title, I can no longer immediately access the classic editor. And when I do finally figure out how to access it, the classic editor menu appears below the title, preventing me from simply copying and pasting and editing my content to my new post.

  • We have tips for transitioning from the classic editor to blocks https://wordpress.com/support/switching-from-the-classic-to-the-block-editor/ and FAQs: https://wordpress.com/support/replacing-the-older-wordpress-com-editor-with-the-wordpress-block-editor/#frequently-asked-questions

And, if you really want to use something like the classic editor, we recommend sticking with the classic block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

We also have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

If you have any feedback on the new editor, we’re always looking for ways to improve it, so please let us know!

To macmanx — Thanks for the quick response, but my problem remains unresolved — Changes to the WordPress opening interface on my site (Citizen Action Monitor) within the last few days has made navigation on my blog considerably more complicated and ill-suited for my simple needs.

Briefly, I prepare my blog posts offline on Word. My posts are reposts of news articles that I copy and paste into a Word document. They are 99% text, pre-formatted in paragraphs. Adding these to my blog has been a simple copy and paste of the complete article using the Classic Editor. Fast and simple.

I don’t need and don’t want a Block Editor. So the recent changes to WordPress’ opening interface have just added screens and screens of complexity and confusion to my life.

The information provided in your response does not address my needs. You can best help by telling me how to use WordPress in a way that allows me to prepare my complete repost offline and then copy and paste it to my blog.

Once the content is copied onto my blog I can add hyperlinks, images, categories, tags etc, as needed. Please make my life simple again.

  • Hi there,

I don’t need and don’t want a Block Editor. So the recent changes to WordPress’ opening interface have just added screens and screens of complexity and confusion to my life.

The block editor is the new WordPress editing experience, and replaces the classic editor you are referring to. There is no way to use the classic editor directly, but you can use the “Classic Block” which is a block that happens to have all the classic editing tools within it. It is essentially like working with the classic editor, but inside of a block.

The information provided in your response does not address my needs. You can best help by telling me how to use WordPress in a way that allows me to prepare my complete repost offline and then copy and paste it to my blog.

You could if you wish add the Classic Block to your document, and then compose your entire post (including pasting content from other sources) within that single block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

The classic block will allow you to add text formatting, hyperlinks, images, etc. so you do not need to use separate blocks for those. They can all happen within the Classic block. Hope this helps.

Thanks jerrysarcastic. The link you included is exactly the same as the link macmanx included in his reply.

Sorry I have to repeat this again — IT’S THE RECENT CHANGES TO THE FIRST AND LAST ITEMS OF THE OPENING MENU IN THE LEFT COLUMN OF WORDPRESS’ OPENING SCREEN INTERFACE THAT ARE MY IMMEDIATE PROBLEM.

“MY HOME” the first item in the new menu and “SETTINGS” the last item in the new interface replace the two items from the previous interface that I relied on to navigate and manage my posts. I used them so much they were so automatic that I can’t even remember their labels. The bottom item took me directly to everything I needed to create my posts. The top item was the one I used to return from my classic editor to the opening interface.

BOTH ARE GONE. Why can’t WordPress simply give me back the opening interface I was using so successfully just a few days ago?

Worse yet, now I’m pressured with a promotion at the very top of the opening screen — “Free domain with a plan – UPGRADE” — What the hell does that mean? I don’t want “a plan”. Just give me back my previous opening interface.

  • Ah, ok, I understand now.

We’re combining the Calypso and WP-Admin sidebars into one that’s consistent across both dashboards. This should help reduce confusion when navigating between Calypso and WP-Admin features.

Where there’s a duplicate feature on WordPress.com, we’re letting you choose whether to default to Calypso or WP-Admin, so please take a moment to go to https://wordpress.com/me/account and set your link preference there. Here’s a screenshot: https://wordpress.com/support/account-settings/#dashboard-appearance

If something feels off, please add more details to this thread, letting us know what you clicked on, what you expected, and what happened instead. If you can share a bit about your typical use, too, that would be helpful.

Please note, I am fjwhite. I posted the original question about how to switch from block editor to classic editor. I have recently changed my password and as a result I can’t reply directly to either macmanx or jerrysarcastic.

Unfortunately the assistance provided so far has not been helpful. If anything, I am more confused than ever. For example, I have no idea what it means to default Calypso or WP-Admin.

macmanx, you asked: “if you can share a bit about your typical use, that would be helpful.” I thought I did that in my first response to you where I wrote:
“Briefly, I prepare my blog posts offline on Word. My posts are reposts of news articles that I copy and paste into a Word document. They are 99% text, pre-formatted in paragraphs. Adding these to my blog has been a simple copy and paste of the complete article using the Classic Editor. Fast and simple.” I have been using WordPress for blogging successfully for 10 years, and now I am completely confused by the recent changes and disappointed with the training materials that do not address my needs. And WordPress’ “First Steps with Classic Editor” is useless because it still shows “Dashboard” on the opening screen which is no longer on the version that I’m using.

And speaking of versions, the so-called “Help” materials give 4 ways to find which version I am using; But none of the methods work for me. And all the training materials are useless because none of them address my specific needs, and do not appear to be related to the version I’m currently stuck with.

As I said, the opening screen on my version no longer shows “Dashboard”. In its place is “My Home”. And the opening screen to the right is completely taken up with a promotional message: “Grow your audience with a podcast.” which is totally useless and irrelevant for my purposes. And without Dashboard” I have no idea what to do next.

I leave you, macmanx and jerrysarcastic, with this question: Is there any way to restore my site to an earlier, simpler version of WordPress, one that uses Dashboard and the Classic Editor, and is not embedded with the Block Editor?

I suggest both you visit my blog https://citizenactionmonitor.wordpress.com/ to see what I’m doing.

  • They are 99% text, pre-formatted in paragraphs. Adding these to my blog has been a simple copy and paste of the complete article using the Classic Editor.

For these, try pasting them into a Classic Block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

The Classic Editor is being phased out.
