  How do I switch my blog over to a domain I own without switching to a paid subscription. Or can I even do that?

  See the Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping) support page. From that page:

  Do you already own a domain name? If you would like to use it here on WordPress.com all you need to do is “map” your existing domain to your site. You will need a WordPress.com Premium or Business plan on your site in order to map a domain.
