How to transfer from .COM to .ORG?
-
I’m following a specific tutorial on how to set up an author website, but I’m currently unable to utilize plug-ins. I believe I have to switch from .com or .org to do this? Does the premium service I signed up for allow that or will I have to get a refund and find a different host site? There should just be an “upgrade button!”
Much thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You will need a self hosted WordPress.org site in order to utilize plugins. We may have a similar plugin that you can use. Let me know what you’re trying to do and I can let you know.
There’s no way to upgrade your currently WordPress.com site to a self hosted site, since you need to move to a new webhost. If you decide to move, just let me know and I can refund your purchase.

Thanks for the response, Shawna. There are actually three plug-ins associated with the author theme and I’m such an incredible noob at this, I think I’m going to move and follow the tutorial until I have a better grasp of what I’m doing. If you could refund my purchase, I would appreciate it. Let me know if I need to send an email or do anything else.
Thanks again.

I’m happy to do that. It looks like you’ve gotten a partial refund for canceling the Premium plan. Would you like me to remove the Domain Mapping upgrade for erikjamesrobinson.com and refund the rest of your purchase?
-
That would great, Shawna. Just to be sure, I bought the domain name on Go Daddy. I’ll be able to use it with WordPress.org, correct?
-
Yep! You can use it with any web host, you’ll just have to update your DNS settings. If you’re not prompted to do that by your new web host, contact their support and ask for the DNS settings you need to map your domain. :)
I’ve refunded the rest of your upgrade. It normally takes around a week for a refund to appear on your bank statement.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with!

Hi, Shawna,
Apologies for yet another email, but after setting up my wordpress.org site, I was having trouble reblogging, specifically using “press this.” In fact, nothing ever appeared on my website, erikjamesrobinson.com at all. Then when someone left a comment on something I reblogged, I realized it was going to erikrobinson.wordpress.com, not .ORG. I thought I had closed erikrobinson.wordpress.com, but it’s still there.
I’ve tried logging out, but I still can’t use PRESS THIS.
I asked for help on .ORG and was told to do a “site redirect.” I purchased that and made erikjamesrobinson.com my primary site, but I’m still unable to reblog.
My question is: do I need the site redirect or should I simply delete erikrobinson.wordpress.com (if possible)?
Thanks again for your help.

Just to confirm, you grabbed the “Press This” bookmark from your self-hosted WordPress.org site? Can you try removing the bookmarklet and re-adding the correct one from the dashboard of your self hosted site?
-
The link actually doesn’t work for me when I put it in bookmarks. It takes me to an error page for Gator Host. I’m going to try and contact them later to fix it.
On those occasions when I try and reblog, I’m using the PRESS THIS button that’s at the bottom of the original blogger’s post. A pop-up window appears with this message:
User robospawn Cannot Access the Dashboard Requested
You are logged in as “robospawn” and do not have the necessary privileges to access the dashboard for “John L. Monk”. If you are not “robospawn”, please log out, and log back in with your username. If you are “robospawn” and you need access, please ask an administrator of the site to invite you.
If you reached this screen by accident and meant to visit one your own sites, here are some shortcuts to help you find your way.
Robospawn is my wordpress.COM user name while Robinsonyo is my .ORG name. The wordpress.com signing box won’t let me sign in with the latter.
-
Thanks for that info! If you’re logged in as robospawn, are you able to select your self hosted site from the site dropdown menu?
-
Unfortunately I do not see that option on the dashboard for Robospawn or Robinsonyo (org). Then again, I can’t seem to open PRESS THIS from my dashboard. When I drag the link to my bookmarks, then go to a blog I want to press, an error message comes up for HostGator with this message:
403 errors usually mean that the server does not have permission to view the requested file or resource. These errors are often caused by IP Deny rules, File protections, or permission problems.
In many cases this is not an indication of an actual problem with the server itself but rather a problem with the information the server has been instructed to access as a result of the request. This error is often caused by an issue on your site which may require additional review by our support teams.
They suggest their support can help. Should I try that route and then come back to you if it does/does not work?
-
If you’d like to get the bookmarklet working, then yes, you’ll need to chat with HostGator’s support.
It sounds like you were using a Press This button at the bottom of another user’s post before. Can you try that when logged in to your WordPress.com account and let me know if you see the blog selection drop down menu?
-
I do not see the blog selection drop down menu. In the screen shot you sent me, I notice it says press this in the upper right corner. I can’t find that either.
-
Can you send me a screenshot of what you see? And a link to the site where you’re clicking on “Press This”? Upload the screenshot to your Media Library here:
-
Hi. I’ve uploaded two shots, but both only have the bookmark link. I don’t know how to get to the image you had. Thanks again for your help, Shawna. I genuinely appreciate it.
-
Thanks for those shots! The image I sent is from the window that pops up when you click on a Press This button, like the one at the bottom of this post on my test site:
This is the type of button you were originally talking about right?
On those occasions when I try and reblog, I’m using the PRESS THIS button that’s at the bottom of the original blogger’s post.
-
Yes and it takes me to the prompt telling me my username is forbidden. I’ve added it to the library for you to see.
Do I need to contact Hostgator before proceeding further?
-
Hmm. Can you send me the URL of that window? The URL I see when I click on the Press This button is this:
I believe the Press This button should work regardless of your HostGator setup. I’m not really sure why you’re getting an access error, since the Press This button shouldn’t lead to a dashboard. If you’ll bear with me a little while longer, we may be able to sort this out without sending you over to HostGator. :)
