How to view/what does padlock mean?

Hi, I use WordPress for a course I teach and my students invite me to view or to be an editor. however, with a couple of students, there is a gray padlock by their title and I am not able to view their work. How can I tell them to correct this? None of us are expert WordPress users, so any help is much appreciated! Thank you!

I believe that will be an issue concerning your browser and if the site has/hasn’t a valid SSL certificate so I don’t think the site will be on WordPress.com servers here where all sites run https as standard.
