I am STRUGGLING to host images from a subdomain

Hello!
I have combed the internet high and low and am having trouble finding the solution to be able to host images from a subdomain, but upload through the main domain.
I have tried modifying the wp-config.php. No dice, just makes a new directory in the main domain.
I have located and filled in ‘upload_url_path’ and ‘upload_path.’ For some reason, either it seems to successfully point to the subdomain, seems to actually finish the upload process, appear as a gray box in the gallery, but make no records in the files at all. Or, it makes a new directory path but in the main domain.Currently, for ‘upload_url_path’ I have entered:
https://media.thewebsite.comAnd ‘upload_path’ is blank.
Ideally, I want it to upload to ‘https://media.thewebsite.com/wp-content/uploads/img’, and did used to have ‘wp-content/uploads/img’ filled in.
Obviously, I am not doing something right. Any help would be appreciated!!

It sounds like you are referring to a WordPress site hosted with another provider (we do not offer the ability to edit wp-config for example) so for help with this we recommend reaching out to the support forum for the open-source version of the WordPress platform, which you can find here: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/
WordPress.com is a managed host, so our version of WordPress does work differently and we would not be able to advise you on how to set that up. The good news is that the folks in the above forum are more familiar with customizations of this nature, and are in the best position to help.
