I can’t access Followed sites prior to January 16, 2020.

    Site: https://eyesfeetears.wordpress.com.
    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi there!

Could you tell us a bit more about this issue? Are you trying to access those sites from the Reader? If so, what happens when you try?
It would also help if you could share a couple of addresses of sites you’re trying to access. Thanks!

Yes, I am trying to access followed sites from the Reader. Usually, I’ll scroll to the points where I last accessed. (I’ve been taking them one by one.) I’ve been away for a 50-day trip and just got back. While trying to pick up where I left off, the scrolling process stops cold in January of 2020. This a.m. I’m only able to get back to January 16.
Two sites I’m following and am able to access independently (I noted those sites before the problem occurred) but can’t scroll to from Followed Sites are:

    Wednesday Links!

    We Broke the World

I’m also following “Stuff in the Basement” and cannot scroll past March of 2020. At the site, I’m able to access to the point at which I left off:
    http://siouxlander.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2019-09-15T05:58:00-05:00&max-results=20&reverse-paginate=true

  • To clarify, you can access the sites in the reader, but for a given site you cannot access older posts on that site yes?

You are referring to what you see when you scroll through the “all sites I follow” feed at https://wordpress.com/read or are you referring to feeds for specific sites, like this one for Gerry Canavan: https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/322369

Or is the issue present both in the main feed, as well as in the sub-feeds for each site?

Also please be aware that the Reader was designed to highlight recent posts from WordPress.com sites, so I do not think the engineers intended for it to show historival data going back more than 12-18 months. We’re checking with our engineers on this now, but it’s likely that for older posts like that you will need to read them on the sites directly, and not in the Reader.

    Thanks for your patience!

Yes, I am referring to just the sites I follow at https://wordpress.com/read. There is no issue at any other site, including the WordPress “Discover” group: https://wordpress.com/discover. The issue is present only at the “follow: site.
I had an inkling that there would be a point beyond which older posts at the “follow” site would not be available. If that is the case, it’s a case of “live and learn.”
Thanks for your attention to the issue.

  • Hi again,

I wanted to update you with some more info from our dev team, who confirmed that we recently adjusted the Reader to show only the last 18 months of posts in cache, to improve overall performance.

As for your Blogspot site, it can be the case that our archive cuts off before 18 months if you added the site to the Reader more recently than that. To explain, our reader is RSS based, so at the time you add a site we connect to it’s RSS feed and start pulling in content.

RSS does have it’s limits though, so we’re not able to grab content prior to the time you added the subscription which is likely why that one does not have posts older than March 2020.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
