I have a domain, but not sure what to do next

Hi I have a domain name and notice you have two options I can choose from. What is the easiest and most cost-effective option for me? I will need my site to be hosted. Does Word Press do this or do I go elsewhere? I want to build a simple blogging site. Thanks. Armando

  • Hi Armando,

First, hosting and domains have nothing to do with each other. Hosting refers to having a server on which your site’s files live. A domain is just an address someone uses to get to that server. So regardless whether you map your existing domain to us or transfer it, we will be hosting your site if the site is on our servers.

To host a site with us, go to https://wordpress.com/start/site/ and follow the steps to create a site. And that’s it. You now have a site hosted with us :)

Then to use your domain with us, go to My Site ->Plans and buy any plan from Personal or higher.

Once you have a plan you’ll be able to add your domain. Here you have two options:

    1) You leave the domain at your current provider, and just connect it to us (you can connect as many domains as you want for free). You’ll pay us to renew the WordPress.com plan every year, and your domain provider to renew the domain each year.

    2) You transfer the domain to us. This is free with your plan, and includes one renewal of your domain at the moment it transfers. From next year onwards you’ll pay us to renew the domain, on top of renewing the WordPress.com plan as well.

So either way, you’ll need to buy a WordPress.com plan now, and then you’ll have to renew the plan and the domain each year going forward. Which is more cost effective would depend on whether the domain is cheaper to renew with us or with your current domain provider.

Without knowing your current domain and where you have it registered I can’t really advise you on that, but you can find the renewal prices for all domains we currently allow for registration on WordPress.com here:
