I have a registered domain

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi
I bought a domain from 1&1. There is no website created, only the domain name at present. My question is – what happens when I transfer my domain to wordpress. How does this happen, do I then create my webpage and if so what happens to my current blogs created in my free account?
    Thanks in advance
    Tom

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Tom,

It’s worth noting there are two types of WordPress: WordPress.com (which we host) and WordPress.org (the self hosted version). There is some information about the differences between the two here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Do you want to use the domain for ontheway65.wordpress.com/create a new WordPress.com site? Or would you prefer to use the domain for a WordPress.org site hosted by 1&1?

Just let me know and I’ll be happy to send more information and look at your options.

    Hi

Thanks for the reply.  I still want to access your blog community but rather than have my domain as my present domain,  the free one. I would like to have my own domain http://www.ontheway.scot

So can I do this with your site and does your site accept transfers from .Scot

    Tom

  • @ontheway65, sure, you could do that with any of our paid plans.

I would recommend choosing the plan first:
    https://wordpress.com/plans

Here’s how to transfer the domain:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/prepare-domain-for-transfer/

After it’s done, be sure to choose to use WordPress.com’s name servers. Or you can switch to our name servers before you initiate the transfer, too.

If you’re currently using email or other services with the domain, let us know and we can help set that up.

    Hi

Thanks for the reply unfortunately it would appear that you don’t support .Scot domains so I don’t know what to do,  I know I can map my domain but I think that would mean that I would be paying for 1&1 to host my website plus have to pay for a wordpress plan.

    Tom

  • Hi Tom,

.scot domains cannot be transferred to us, no, so to use that domain with us you’d need to map it instead.

I think that would mean that I would be paying for 1&1 to host my website plus have to pay for a wordpress plan.

If you map the domain to us, we are your host, so you won’t need a hosting plan from 1&1 as well. You will need to pay them for the domain’s registration, i.e. renewing the domain every year, but not for hosting as well.
