I mapped my domain, but can't create blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve mapped my domain (childsafe.bike), but now I can’t see how to create a blog. It keeps asking me to buy a .com or use the free wordpress address.

  • Hello again!

Are you still interested in using your domain here on WordPress.com, or do you intend to continue to use it on the non-WordPress.com site that it is currently pointing to?

If you do want to use it on WordPress.com, you’ll need to head to your registrar and update the domain’s nameservers to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM, NS2.WORDPRESS.COM, and NS3.WORDPRESS.COM, and re-purchase the Domain Mapping upgrade here on WordPress.com for the blog you’d like to use the domain on.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Best,
    Jen

Thanks, Jen. The answer to whether I use wordpress depends upon whether I can figure out how to customize your themes. I’m not a developer so I found the themes very hard to work with. I’m looking for something that looks and feels more like a website, but which has commenting capabilities. Unbelievably, the GoDaddy site building tool that i used doesn’t have this… Thanks again!

  • Hey there!

You may want to look into our support documentation on the Custom Design upgrade. It is a pretty powerful tool to customize many aspects of the appearance of your theme, without the need to do any code:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/

The best thing is that you can try out the customizations without the need to purchase anything. If you decide that you do want to stay here with us on WordPress.com, I’ll sweeten the deal and give you Custom Design for free for a year. :)

Most themes also already have built-in customization capabilities that can be done without the need for the Custom Design upgrade.

I see that you’ve currently got the Twenty Ten theme active; it is a very basic theme by itself, but with some customizations, it is a pretty awesome looking theme. Here are a few great blogs that are using it, if you want to peek:

    http://dailynibbles.com/

    http://bakelovenotwar.co.za/

One thing to keep in mind is if you purchase a Premium (paid) theme, you have direct access to the theme’s developer in their own WordPress.com support forum, so if there’s anything special that you want to do with the site, if it is possible, they can help you with it.

You can definitely (easily) set up a WordPress.com site to look like a traditional website, rather than a scrolling blog. You can check that out, here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

Let me know if I can help with anything else in the future. Another perk of using WordPress.com is having access to support from myself and other Happiness Engineers. :)

    Best,
    Jen
