I need clarification on the issue described below — running ads — etc
-
I want to run ads on my wordpress blog. At the same time, because I’ve been with WordPress now for over a year, I don’t want to risk losing any content and I’d like to maintain some similarities.
The support area for ads states — “You can run any ads you’d like if you manage your own WordPress installation.” So if I download wordpress and manage my own installation, I would be allowed to run ads??

Yes if you hire a webhost http://wordpress.org/hosting and setup a WordPress.ORG software install, you can run ads.
You cannot do that on this blog http://fashionnexus.wordpress.com/
WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate.
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/1. Hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and purchase a domain.
2. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.
http://wordpress.org/themes/
http://wordpress.org/plugins/3. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.
4. Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/5. Transfer subscribers https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/migrating-wordpresscom-followers-to-new-self-hosted-site?replies=1
6. Set your wordpress.com blog visibility to private. To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
Alternatively you can purchase a Guided Transfer and Staff will do the move and set up for you http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

Ok, this is very helpful — thank you so much! I think from what little I’ve seen with other blog sites, I knew it would be a pain to transfer my content elsewhere and thought if would be easiest if I could somehow stick with the WordPress family, at least.
I am going to get started on this ASAP, thanks again!!
