I need help in hosting my website

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I have developed the website on wordpress and have already taken the domain from some other forums. Thus I can see that I have two options i.e. to transfer the domain at wordpress, or map my domain. Can you please suggest me the pros and cons, and the pricing on both the cases?

  • Hi –

This is a great question. And, you are correct. Bringing a domain to WordPress.com can be achieved through mapping or transfer. The best option depends on your domain and personal preference.

With mapping, the domain is just pointed to WordPress.com. It remains at the current registrar and each year you have to pay for mapping from us, and the registration from the domain provider. This is typically the more expensive option.

When you transfer the domain to us we take over as your registrar, and everything regarding your site is in one place. That’s important for a lot of people. Another bonus is that you’re only paying one place.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • Oh! I forgot to mention that a domain must be at least 60 days old in order to transfer it. That’s an ICANN regulation.

Thanks a lot for your response. So mapping my domain with WordPress is an expensive option and transferring is not possible as my domain is 10 days old. Any other quick solution?

  • Hi there,

Mapping a domain is completely free.

Whether you map the domain here, or transfer it, you will need to buy a paid plan to do it, but you don’t pay for the mapping itself.

If you own a domain at another provider, this is the only way to use it with a site hosted on WordPress.com. There aren’t any alternative options.

Thanks for your response. So for map domain, I can see two options – Attach your domain to WordPress.com and update the domain name’s servers to point to WordPress.com.

Kindly help me on one more question I.e. If I change the server names at BigRock pointing to WordPress then would I be good to go? Or I also need to buy a paid plan for mapping first?

You’ll need to add the plan to your WordPress.com account in order for the mapping to work. If you update the domain name servers at BigRock, with out that plan in place, it will load with an error.

Oka. How much time this will take an overall for the website to come live after I buy a plan and make the mapping configuration?

Do I also get emails from WordPress after this mapping as BigRock emails won’t work after this mapping?

So kindly help me with the email part and timeline thing so that I can get it done

  • Name server changes can take up to 72 hours to complete, but in most cases your domain will be showing your WordPress.com site within a few hours of you making that change at your domain provider.

Do I also get emails from WordPress after this mapping as BigRock emails won’t work after this mapping?

We do not provide email hosting. If you have an email account configured at BigRock, you’ll need to add the required DNS records for that to work on our end before you switch the name servers.

In that case, make sure you do things in this order:

    1) Add a paid plan and domain mapping here on WordPress.com.

    2) When you add domain mapping, our system will try to import your existing DNS. However, we’re not always able to do that, so you’ll have to check the DNS and make sure all the MX and other records required for your email to work is set up correctly on our end. Bigrock support should be able to tell you what you need to have on our end.

    Manage Your DNS Records

    Add Email to Your Domain

    3) Only once your email DNS records are configured, do you switch the name servers to us.

If you do things in this order, you hopefully won’t see any downtime at all on your email.
