I bought a domain name through whois.com less than 60 days ago, so I cannot move my host right now. But I paid to have my domain point to WordPress.com, at a whopping $96, not knowing that I now have the word “WordPress” permanently stuck in my domain name. I need it out of there, as I feel my domain presence is not ruined.

    Hi there!

I’ll be happy to help you with your queries.

All WordPress.com sites have a unique WordPress.com address to them. This is similar to how all websites in the world have IP addresses. We just use WordPress.com addresses, so they are easier for you to use.

But your visitors won’t see this address when there’s a custom domain set as the primary address. I see that you added the domain advancedexec.com as a Domain Connection. When this domain is configured, your WordPress.com site will show up at advancedexec.com, and the WordPress.com address will not show up.

A “Domain Connection” is used when you already own the domain with another registrar. If you can’t transfer the domain to us yet, you can still use it via Domain Connection. You already added it on our end; all you need to do now are:

    1. On whois.com, add the WordPress.com nameservers to the domain by following these steps.
    2. Wait for up to 72 hours for the changes to take effect. It usually takes a couple of hours, but sometimes, it can take up to 72.
    3. When you notice that visiting your domain redirects you to your WordPress.com site, you’ll know that the domain is ready. At that point, follow these steps to set the domain as the primary address on your site.

When all three steps are done, your domain will load your WordPress.com site without showing WordPress.com in the address.

As mentioned, the WordPress.com address is just the underlying site address. Its benefits? You can access your site and work on it right away without having to wait for the domain to be configured. When the domain is configured, all your work on the site will show up on the domain. Even if you change your domain in the future or your domain expires, the WordPress.com site address ensures all content can still be visible.

Hope that helps! Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.

it had been more than two weeks and my site still reads wordpress.com

Your address shows as wpstaging for me so it looks like there is still one more step for you to take. I’m sure staff will return here and assist.

  • Hi there,

I’ve set your domain advancedexec.com as your site’s primary address. So, the previous address (advancedexec.wpcomstaging.com) will be hidden from your visitors.

Let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with.
