I need to go back to a previous name

I want to use WordPress under a username which I used previously, before changing to my current name. I changed it initially because I decided to use Blogger, and didn’t want anybody Googling the name of my blog to go to an empty WordPress, but now I’d like to migrate the entire website over here using the name that I previously used. When I try to change my username to the previous one it says that it’s already taken, and when I navigate to that username’s WordPress and Gravatar the account is showing up as deleted. How can I use re-register it? I don’t want to be prevented from using WordPress because of a username issue! Thanks.

If you deleted it presumably you read the three warnings and email that all said deletion was permanent and irreversible. It is. Pick another name.

Yeah except I’ve built up a brand, a following and bought a paid-for domain under this name, so obviously I’m reluctant to do that.

Once you change your username you will not be able to change it back and the old name will not be available for you or anyone to use. http://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/
