Hi –
This is a common question, and yes, you can do this. What you’ll do is build the WordPress.com site on the free address that we give you. That is vittilog.wordpress.com, or you could register a different one.
Some folks like to keep their free site private, and hidden, until the domain is connected and things are ready to go live. If that sounds of interest you’ll just need to change one privacy setting to do it. See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
When it comes time to connect the domain there are 2 options.
1. Map it: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/delete-mapped-domain-8/
2. Transfer: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/Read over both options to see which is best for you.
Last thing I want to share are a few pages that are helpful with getting started and building site traffic.

OK thanks, I have a Premium WordPress account and it is not allowing me to upload my theme, how can I fix this?

You’d need to upgrade to the WordPress.com Business plan to upload a theme from elsewhere that’s really designed for the WordPress.org software.
