I have tagged your post so the staff can see it. Please wait patiently, someone will get back to you shortly. 😃

  • Hi there,

Unfortunately, when you canceled your domain, it went into what’s known as the “redemption phase”. This is a standard part of the domain lifecycle, which occurs when a domain is canceled or not renewed. During this phase, the domain is held by the registrar and becomes more challenging to recover.

To restore your domain, there is an $80 redemption fee. This fee is required by the domain registrar to recover the domain from redemption.

If you agree to proceed, we can send you a payment form to initiate the recovery of your domain. Once we have successfully recovered your domain, you can point it to your site hosted with a different provider.

Please note that after 60 days from the domain’s original registration date, the domain will be unlocked, allowing you to transfer it to the registrar of your choice.

We’re here to assist you through this process. If you’re ready to proceed, or if you have any further questions, please let us know.

AN $80 REDEMPTION FEE. You have got to be kidding me. I paid for that domain in good faith, thinking that WordPress.com was a stand up company….I see that is not the case. Either transfer my domain like I asked or refund my $24.

  • Hi, you can find more information regarding the domain cancellation and expiry process here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/cancel-refund-a-domain/#what-happens-when-i-cancel-my-domain

Unfortunately we’re unable to waive the redemption fee; if you’d like to proceed with the redemption process please let us know and we can prepare a payment form for it.

    Then simply refund my $24.

  • Hi @garryhill630b6f38e2, if it helps: when you buy a domain, we have just a few days grace where we can release the domain and refund it. That’s reflected in our refund policy here.

After those first few days, the domain registration gets a more permanent status, where cancellations and expirations are more serious. That is why we put up warnings when you try to cancel one. We can’t get a refund at that point, so we don’t offer one. And it won’t just be released.

So it goes for most domains (including .com) regardless of where you buy them. Had you contacted us immediately after cancelling, we could have simply restored it, but after a few days, it goes into redemption. You can read more about the process here. We aren’t able to waive redemption fees from the registrar.

If you’d like, we can send an invoice for that. So long as we act quickly, we can get the domain back as you had it and you can point it to another host and transfer it later if you’d like. If we can’t get it back (it’s a time sensitive process) we’ll refund the redemption fee.

The other option is to wait out the redemption process, but please be aware there’s a risk of losing the domain completely, and at best you’ll be waiting / checking its status for several weeks.

Coming from someone who learned this the hard way with a domain I registered long ago (before WordPress even existed), I absolutely understand the frustration. I’d recommend the redemption fee if you can manage it. Then just be mindful to keep the domain renewed and always in your possession going forward (correct email, transfer to another provider if you want to change registrars, etc), regardless of what services you use with it.

Let us know ASAP if you’d like that redemption fee invoice for $80. Again, we’ll refund it if we can’t get the domain back for you.

So….You cannot go to your nameserver NS1.WORDPRESS.COM and change it to point to NS1.WINHOST.COM?

  • We can’t edit anything on the domain while it’s in redemption.

That is pretty sad that you do not have control over your own name server (ns1.wordpress.com)

@garryhill630b6f38e2 I just wanted to further clarify that the “registrar” is a different business. When you bought the domain, WordPress acted as a broker and purchased the domain from the registrar on your behalf.

The policy regarding redemption periods and the fee are those of the registrar and not WordPress. Generally, with some exceptions, hosting and domain registration services entail different segments of the market.
