I signed up with WordPress.org and now seem to be connected to wordpress.com (?)

  Good day
  Im somewhat in the dark and would like some light to be shed on what is happening.

  I have downloaded wordpress.org through Softaculous. My site is https://marietmostert.com/

  I then installed Jetpack and Akismet and got the following message on email that I am now on WordPress.com (?)

  1. Can I be on wordpress.org as well as WordPress. com (?)
  2. The site now seems to switch from http to https (My host provides SSL so I want my site to be https off course.

  I emailed Jetpack and they gave me the following reply with a link (which does not seem to take me anywhere specific)

  Yes, you can.

  WordPress.org is simply the website where the WordPress community works on the open source WordPress software. If you have a WordPress.org account, the only thing that account lets you do is post in the forums, message boards and bug trackers over there. A WordPress.org account has nothing to do with your site.

  Your site uses the open source WordPress software made on WordPress.org, and is hosted at Softaculous. You have an admin login for that site that is unique to that site only, and which cannot be used to log in anywhere else, either WordPress.com or WordPress.org.

  WordPress.com is also a hosting provider, like Softaculous, where we host sites using our own modified version of WordPress. Your site is not with us, and you’re not using our version of WordPress.

  But the company that owns WordPress.com, also owns Jetpack and Akismet, and using those plugins require that you have a WordPress.com username account, and in the case of Jetpack that you actually connect your stand-alone WordPress site to your WordPress.com account. This allows you to manage your site from our interface, and even log into your dashboard using your WordPress.com account rather than the unique admin login for your site itself. But your site is still using the open source version of WordPress, and is still hosted on Softaculous’s servers.

  I know this can be confusing, so let me know if anything about this is unclear :)

  SSL is set up and controlled by your hosting provider, Softaculous in this case, so please contact them for any questions you have about that.

  That isn’t an email. That is a forum thread created via the WordPress.com contact form at https://wordpress.com/help/contact, same as this thread I’m replying to now. That thread was marked as spam, which is why you can’t see it. This thread of yours I also fished out of the spam queue. It likely got spammed because of the number of links, and because it’s quoting two different emails from us in full. I’ve unspammed and deleted the other thread as a duplicate now.

  To use Jetpack, Akismet, or VaultPress, you need an active WordPress.com account, so you did the correct thing by activating this account.
