I thought WordPress was free, but it won’t let me create a site for free

  I thought WordPress was free without any hosting or paid themes/plugins, but when I try to create a site and use an existing domain it forces me through a subscription page. Did something change?

  I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  Nothing has changed. Only a wordpress.com subdomain is for free. If you want to use your own custom domain, you need a paid plan – https://wordpress.com/pricing/ – together with a Domain Connection – https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/connect-existing-domain/
