i want to embed players to my songs
-
Hi, I have had my wordpress.com blog a while now and recently saw my embedded players for the songs and mixes i produce disappear from my blog. The embedded players are from my reverbnation site, and my mixcloud site. My wordpress was, is, and will always be a music blog, this is the purpose i created it for. Here’s a link to my site:
https://deftproductions.wordpress.com
I have permission for the images and songs as i created ALL of them, so i’m failing to see why they have suddenly disappeared. I read about the hotlinks and the like, but as i have said, all work is by myself and the widgets on the 2 music sites mentioned earlier are given to the artists to share their work and let others enjoy it too.
I am looking forward to your reply as my wordpress.com blog is not doing what i intended it (a music blog) and is rendered a bit useless at the moment.
Kind regards
Deft

Forgot to mention that the players work in internet explorer but don’t seem to work in chrome/chromium. My pc is running Windows XP.

It looks like you are using the gigya shortcode to embed at least some of your players (for example: https://deftproductions.wordpress.com/2013/09/02/songs-produced-by-deft-2/ ) that is most likely the source of the issue. The use of gigya is not something that we support.
We do offer Soundcloud and Audiomack players:

Hi Rootjosh, Thanks for the response.
I am not a member of soundcloud and don’t wish to be. I also have no idea what audiomac is and don’t wish to join that either.
WordPress did support these formats as the players are there in IE just not chrome. I’m slightly pissed off to say the least as my wordpress site no longer works as it should even though i have permissions for all of the material.
I’m hoping there is some way this can be resolved as wordpress is happy to take my money but then doesn’t deliver the goods.
Also, why has this post been limited just to me and staff as i clicked public so other could learn from this?
Yours angrily

I can see how that would be frustrating. Unfortunately, we don’t technically support these types of gigya shortcode ‘hacks’. I am glad that gigya worked for you for a while. But as it isn’t something that we have ever supported, there is no guarantee of permanence.
Now, I can tell you that I suspect this is related to your site’s move to https (versus http). You could try updating the links in your code to use https instead. This may not work though if either gigya or Reverbnation don’t support https embeds.

This thread is in the “Staff Answers” area of the forums where only the original poster and WordPress.com staff can reply. But everyone can view the thread and it will get picked up by Google for anyone searching with a similar question in the future.

Hi Rootjosh,
Aye, frustrated muchly. ;)
Are there some examples you maybe able to send me ref the https links i need to try? This is the first site i have ever done and i’m no programmer so all of this is new to me and brain taxing as a mutha f*@k#r. lol
I’m glad it is this is still viewable to the public as i can imagine there are going to be a lot of artists having this problem too.
If you are able to send me something /anything relating to how i can sort this issue, i would be most grateful.
If nothing works i shall simple leave wordpress and inform any other artists that it isn’t worth using wordpress for these reasons.
Thank you for your time so far and i look forward to your reply

Hi there!
Are there some examples you maybe able to send me ref the https links i need to try?
Sure! As an example, in the player that Josh referenced above you currently have this URL as part of the code:
src="http://cache.reverbnation.com/widgets/swf/40/pro_widget.swf"What you can do is change that to be:
src="https://cache.reverbnation.com/widgets/swf/40/pro_widget.swf"The only change here is that the URL now starts with “https” instead of “http”. To clarify, there is no guarantee that this will work. Whether or not it works will depend entirely on whether Reverbnation and gigya support secure HTTP for their embeds.
If nothing works i shall simple leave wordpress and inform any other artists that it isn’t worth using wordpress for these reasons.
I just want to clarify, this is really only an issue with WordPress.com. If you moved to a self hosted WordPress site, you’d be able to use the default Reverbnation embed codes and you wouldn’t have to use gigya at all.
WordPress.com has its limitations since its a shared platform and we just can’t feasibly allow everyone to install every type of plugin and widget they want. We completely understand this, so if these players are integral to your site we try to make it as easy as possible for you to move to a self hosted site. Your content is yours and you can take it with you.
If you’re interested in moving to a self hosted WordPress, let me know and I can give you some directions to do that.

Hi Shawna,
Thanks for the reply. I had no problem understanding what you have written and thank you for the code examples. I have implemented the changes and my mixcloud player starts to load but is then cut off about halfway with the message ‘this content is unavailable and may have been removed’. It hasn’t been removed though, i checked mixcloud and reverb to make sure.
The reverbnation widget has now appeared, but just as a solid white box.
A self hosted WordPress? I don’t have any money (as i’ve poured it into this one) and am doubting this switch over is going to be free?
Regards

It’s not free. But it can be quite cost effective. You’ll need to purchase hosting through a webhost and install the free WordPress software there. Then you can install the themes, plugins, and widgets you want. Here’s a little bit more about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:
It looks like you’ve got about six months left on your Custom Design upgrade for you site. Since cost is a concern, it may be something to look at when the renewal time comes around.
Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thank you for your time and efforts regarding these issues. I shall have to keep cracking at it until i can find some solutions. You explanation Shawna really helped me understand what was going on so at least i have learnt something tonight.
I haven’t got the money to be moving to another site, so I’ll just have to ride this one out and see hat happens if i can’t find solutions.

I’m happy to help. I’m sorry we don’t support the players you’re trying to use, but I’ve gone ahead and logged a suggestion for Reverbnation widgets.
It may be worthwhile in the future to price out the cost of moving to a self hosted site. There are plenty of bargain web hosts which work perfectly well as long as you’re not getting massive amounts of traffic. It does involve a bit more work on your part though.
If you ever decide to go that route, just let us know and we can help point you in the right direction to get your new site set up. :)
