I want to register my site as a domain using GoDaddy and then install wordpress

I created my domain through wordpress but have figured out that it is easier to create a domain through GoDaddy and then install wordpress onto that site so that I can have total freedom with customization and coding. Do I just delete the domain from wordpress and then purchase via Go Daddy? or is there a way to transfer it? If I need to delete it from WordPress in order to move forward please let me know how to do that.

    Thank you!

To point the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service), please follow the instructions here.
Note you will need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)

I’m in way over my head I think. I got as far as the Domain Administration step where I’m supposed to change the password, but there’s no option to do that. I’m wondering if deleting the domain might be easier and then just [purchasing it on godaddy and then having my developer install wordpress?

  • It looks like things are a bit different now, sorry about that!

At the bottom of Store -> Domains in your Dashboard, you’ll see a drop-down menu where you can select exactly what you’d like to do with the domain. Then, you’ll be able to change the password and the nameservers.

I don’t recommend canceling the domain, as we cannot guarantee when (or even if) it will be available for purchase again.
