I wish to change my domain mapping to a sub-domain – how?
-
Hello.
I currently have evilrix.com hosted with wordpress.com. I would like to change this to being just a sub-domain, to which I’ll set a CNAME entry. I would like the sub-domain to be blog.evilrix.com. I can figure out how to make this change without purchasing a new domain mapping.
Can you please advise if it is possible to remap this domain, please?
Thanks.

On WordPress.com, you can use a subdomain of a domain that you already own as your blog’s domain.

You cannot map a sub-domain without paying for a domain mapping upgrade and you must have a domain mapping upgrade before you can map a sub-domain. Are you clear on that?

I already have a domain mapping that is paid for… but it’s a top-level domain that is mapped. I no longer wish to have it mapped as a top level domain. I wish to revert the nameserver back to my registrar and then set up a sub-domain. All I want to do is convert my top-level domain mapping to a sub-domain mapping.
In other words, I want ‘evilrix.com’ to be hosted by my registrar and I then want to set a CNAME for blog.evilrix.com back to my wordpress blog. Given that I’ve already paid to map this whole domain is it really that unreasonable to want to just change it to a sub-domain? Do I really have to pay again to do this? If so that would seem completely bonkers!

Given that you want to remove the domain mapping for the top level domain which means it will revert to a .wordpress.com URL, my answer is: “Yes, it seems you will need both”. However, I tagged this thread for a definitive Staff response. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.
