If I have professional email with gmail will it work when I map my domain?

I have professional email with gmail that reflects my domain ((email visible only to moderators and staff)) – ie, my email is not hosted with my hosting co. My domain is currently pointed at a site (with my own domain) hosted with Weebly. I am wanting to map my domain to my WordPress.com site and change the whole thing over to WordPress, but was concerned about my email: will I need to change anything, or will my email still work without any changes to it?

My domain is registered with domains.com – though this doesn’t affect email, I don’t think. Essentially, I’ve read too many help files and am utterly, utterly confused now…

    Thanks for your help!

  • Hi there, if you’d like to map your domain to WordPress.com, you’ll need to set up some special DNS records to keep your email working.

Here are our instructions on adding email to a mapped domain. We have several specific guides on adding email from several popular providers, such as GoDaddy and Network Solutions, along with a generic guide for any email provider, that runs through the necessary steps. If you’re not sure what they are, can ask your email provider for the necessary DNS records for email.

If you need further help, just let us know.

Hi there, and thank-you for the response.

Yes I need further help please!
Firstly, I’ve changed the DNS records with my domain registrar. Then I went in to change my MX records in my WordPress dashboard… and I can’t find ‘domains’ under Settings. (I know I may have to wait a bit for the propagation of the domain name…etc etc)

I have paid for an upgrade bundle with WordPress, but already had my own domain, so haven’t purchased one with WordPress. So I don’t think that WordPress.com knows I have a domain…so I can’t get to the relevant section in Settings (ie: it’s not showing up in the menu) so that I can have my email work! Gah! I can quote my PayPal transaction number if you need me to…

    Advice please!
    Thanks again,
    Tamara

I’ve just had another look – my upgrade is there, but my domain name that I’ve changed the name servers for is not. Will my domain just show up through the mapping process?

    Sorry for the many replies!
I have figured out the domain thing, entered my domain and got it working.

Now with the email: I’ve entered the MX values that Google Apps has provided (not easily, mind you…) and have verified and saved the custom DNS records. Just waiting to see when it will work, now.

Again, sorry for the many replies – I really did think I couldn’t do it myself. :)
