  If I sign up today, will I be charged the full year today? I read the section about renewals, and that they would let you know in advance and the month before, but wasn’t sure if that only applied to auto renewals.

  Yes if you upgrade to a paid plan you will be charged for twelve months in advance immediately. Then in eleven months time (approx.) the auto renewal for a further twelve months will be debited. This is to ensure that any custom domain address you have set up does not lapse.
