I'm on the wrong platform

I’m on the wrong platform. I signed up for the upgraded WordPress.com membership and secured my URL through you, AND purchased a plugin from WishList only to find out I can’t use the plugin here. That would have been good to know way earlier in the process! How do I change without it taking an act of Congress to move my URL? I need to move to self hosting and WordPress.org. This really sucks.

  • If you’re interested, we do offer an upgrade called Guided Transfer (available in the Store section of your blog’s Dashboard) where we take care of everything for you: http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

Otherwise, you’ll need to install WordPress from http://wordpress.org/ on a hosting provider. We have some recommendations at http://get.wp.com/hosting/

Then, direct your domain to your new hosting provider by changing your name servers: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/

Once that’s done, you can move your content following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities.

WordPress.org has complete support and documentation sites for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress at:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/

We do offer yearly and one-time premium support packages for self-hosted WordPress sites through our VIP program, available at http://vip.wordpress.com

Thanks for the information. I’ve already set up a site at GoDaddy, and am now in the process of changing the A record in the DNS menu, because I had already purchased the domain name through you.

My question now is, how do I get my $99 back for the WordPress.com upgrade I purchased today?

  • Your bundle included the domain registration.

If you’d like, I can cancel and refund the rest of the bundle for $73.

As for the domain, if we cancel the domain, it can take up to several weeks, and we can’t guarantee that your domain will be available to you again once canceled.

If you want to keep using your domain but you don’t want to use WordPress.com anymore, you don’t have to cancel it.

Instead, you can move the domain to another site, using the Domain Administration tool under Store > Domains, at the bottom of the page.

Of course, I can cancel and refund everything for the full $99 if you don’t mind the chance of losing onpurposechristianity.com.

Please let us know how you’d like to proceed!

OK…I don’t want to cancel the domain, but I’m not sure I’m able to do what I need to do in the Domain Administration tool. The guy at GoDaddy said, “Change the A record to 50.62.64.1” But in the Administration tool, it seems to only allow me to change subdomains. I got a .com URL through you and I want to point that .com URL to the GoDaddy server. Will putting “A webmail 50.62.64.1,” as in the example, get that done?

  • Changing the A Record is very complicated and not really necessary. They should be able to provide you with your hosting account’s name servers, which you can direct your domain to following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/

Or, at the very least, GoDaddy used to provide name servers. If they refuse to, please let me know.

As for the bundle, I have canceled and refunded all but the domain.
