Import

Hi, I have a free membership of WordPress right now and was trying to upload to my live account a website I have built on WordPress platform locally. I simply used export tab on my local website to retrieve the necessary files and then used import tab on the live website. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to upload it, even though it said it was a successful upload, nothing has changed on the website. I also wanted to upload it using ‘duplicator’ plugin, however I’m not sure how can I access the file manager for Live WordPress. I wonder whether I can upload the website I have built locally to a live site that is free, or the problem is that I would need to buy a membership for that. Or maybe I’m doing something wrong. I’m a beginner in this. Thank you in advance

  • Hi there,

I can see about 18 pages successfully imported to your site. Is that what you were trying to import, or are you missing more content?

Please note that the WordPress you used locally to build your site is the self-hosted WordPress.org software. That software is different from the version we use on WordPress.com, so it’s not possible to upload that entire site to WordPress.com. All you can import to WordPress.com are your posts and pages you created on the local install. Everything else – user profiles, theme, plugins, settings – none of that can be uploaded to your WordPress.com site.

It is also not possible to install plugins on WordPress.com, nor do you have access to the file manager here with us. There is no upgrade that changes this, but these are two of the primary differences between WordPress.com and the self-hosted WordPress.org software.
