Import a sql database backup from a previous wordpress blog

  I want to create my blog from a previous database backup in .sql
  I have the “database backup file” I received by mail from my previous blog (hosted by hostmonster) but when I try to import here on my free wordpress new blog it tells me that the file’s format is incorrect and asks me for a xml file (that I don’t have) and my previous blog has already been deleted.
  Can you please explain me how to use my sql backup?
