Import another WP blog but archive is 120Mbytes

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to import an existing WordPress blog hosted somewhere else but my archive is 120 Mbytes and size limit is 15 Mbytes. Can this be done if I upgrade to Premium ?

And how can I transfer all my media library (2 gigabytes) from previous blog to my current blog hosted by WordPress.com ?

    Thanks a lot!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. The Premium plan doesn’t change the file size for importing content as an XML file, I’m afraid.

If you look under Tools ->Export on your self-hosted site there should be an option to limit your exports to specific date ranges. You can then break your export up into several smaller files. I’m afraid you’ll need to ask in the WordPress.org forum about the specifics of this process: http://wordpress.org/support/

Then you just import those files one at a time to your WordPress.com site, following the instructions here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

All media files you have embedded in posts and pages should be transferred along with your content, as long as the self-hosted site is still live and public. Sometimes it doesn’t work 100%, though, so make sure you don’t delete anything from the old site until you’re sure it’s in the new one’s library. Media files that aren’t embedded in posts you’ll need to download and re-upload manually.

Also see this support doc for more information: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/view-all/

I’m just curious: is that file you’re trying to import an XML file? Or is it the complete database for your self-hosted site? You’ll only be able to import your content (posts, pages, comments, tags and categories) via an XML file generated under Tools ->Export in the dashboard.

Thank you very much for all these details, it helps a lot! I’m gonna check out with my current host how to generate chunks of my blog, so as to proceed the way you’ve described. And I feel much better to read that the media files are gonna be transferred along with my content.
The file I’m trying to import is indeed an XML file, generated with the Export feature.
I’ll click this topic as ‘resolved’ as soon as I can confirm it.
    Thank you again!

  • I’m glad this answer works for you :)

As far as I know, if you’re running the latest version of the WordPress.org software this option for smaller exports should be built in to the dashboard, but do check with your host and the WordPress.org forums if you can’t find it.

Also be aware the importer sometimes gets stuck, even with smaller imports. If this happens, just let us know in this thread, or start a new one, and then add “modlook” to the tags area to alert staff of the problem.

And I feel much better to read that the media files are gonna be transferred along with my content.

I just want to clarify: this won’t happen immediately. The XML will only import the links to those images, and then WordPress.com will fetch them over the next couple of days. So don’t delete anything form the old site until you’re completely sure it’s in the media library of your WordPress.com site.

Unfortunately, that’s not built in to my dashboard but I’ve just asked to my host to add it. I’ll keep you posted.
And thank you for the clarification about the media library!

  • Please ask in the WordPress.org forum as well. There might be a subforum for our specific hosting provider and they might have advice for you there.
